ECITE 2006 in Haslach / Austria

ECITE moment

Dear contacters,
Finally we found a decision concerning ECITE moment. We needed to adapt our concept to our financial possibilities.

What is ECITE moment about?

ECITE moment is making an effort to bring together people from the region with you from abroad. Our basic thought of this special project is an opening of the conference towards the environment, its culture, its history, and its local art practice and art tradition. We decided to underline the communicative strength of contact improvisation and its excellent ability as a meeting ground for all kind of people with different bodies and abilities to move.

In the wide field of reference „my body, my home“ we like to place the hypothesis to consider our body our home.

„to be present in our body is a form of awareness, and it is a first step
toward being kind to ourselves and others. In coming into our body we become connected to our greater home, the earth; we become a part of the earth and she a part of us.“

Linda Hartley, Wisdom of the Body Moving, an Introduction to Body-Mind Centering

We have been inviting several local teams to collaborate with international contact artists to share time and space (August 12 to 19) in preparation of a short performance on August 19, 2006. The short performance pieces are partly site-specific and placed somewhere in the Vonwiller conference building. This special building has been renovated just a couple of years ago – till the 90s people, mostly women, have been working in this linen factory.

The local teams excited to meet you are
1) people with special needs / mixed ability together with a musician
2) a traditional men's choir based in Haslach
3) 5 artists of a Czech writers' and musicians' meeting in Cesky Krumlov
4) 2 contemporary musicians
5) a visual artist working with cloth/textile
6) a women' organization in Rohrbach

We invite you to participate in one of the 6 projects in different ways:
see PROJECT DISCRIPTIONS. In GENERAL INFORMATION at the end you find very important details for your participation.

We hope very much that ECITE moment is triggering your imagination awakening your desire to join. We are curiously looking forward to receiving your ideas.

All the best
Sylvia and Ingrid

PROJECT DISCRIPTIONS

1) people with special needs / mixed ability

Freu mich schon“
Daniela Egger

2) a traditional men's choir based in Haslach

“ The activities of this choir are a harmonic part of the cultural course of
the year of the historical weaving town Haslach for more than 170 years.“
Martin Springer, chairman

This choir is the oldest men´s choir of Austria founded 1833 with its home in Haslach. Its repertory includes Austrian traditional folk songs, classical songs and pop songs. The leader of the choir has already worked in theatres as a musician.

b) the working structure
You need to join an afternoon lab during ECITE II facilitated by Sylvia and Ingrid dealing with a specific performance score as a preparation. In addition you will meet the choir at one of their regular Thursday evening rehearsals on August 17. The framing rule of this meeting will be that there will be no agreements made between the choir and the dancers or the dancers and the dancers. You make up your individual ideas about dancing while the men are singing.

c) what we want from you
Whoever will have attended the lab and the choir's rehearsal is invited to perform on Saturday, August 19 while the choir is singing for about 10 minutes. This improvisation will take place in the “Großer Saal” (big hall) of the Vonwiller building.

d) what we offer
Having fun. Performing with life music which is very typical for the region

3) 5 artists of a Czech writers' and musicians' meeting in Cesky Krumlov

a) more about the local team and the artistic cooperation
The young art foundation ART ECHO in Cesky Krumlov includes musicians, visual artists and poets.
They share their work with other Czech and German speaking artists in an annual meeting in August. Starting point of our special cooperation is crossing the boarders: the boarders of your artistic discipline, your habits, the boarders of politics and geography; Leaving your home as an artist to move towards insecure land and to leave your professional home behind.

“ Signal x Emptiness x Movement x Silence x Sound x Stillness
The topic is searching mutually depending opposites and interdisciplinary synthesis between the visual, musical, poetic and dancing expression. How can a visual artist express himself/herself without his/her usual working tools? Is it possible to make music without sound, make poetry without words, and dance without movement? These are questions we want to find answers to in our showing on stage. Dissolving seeming paradoxes enables us to dive deeper
into the represented disciplines taking distance from our old habits.”
ART ECHO

The three initiating participants will be the visual artist Marek Borsany, the musician Petr Filak, and the poet Jan Maryska. There will be two more artists joining. More about Petr Filak: www.maraca.cz

b) the working structure
This project will mostly take place in the Czech Republic in a farm house near Cesky Krumlov. You will meet the artists on Sunday, August 12, in Haslach. The same day you will travel to Cesky Krumlov spending two and a half days there jamming and rehearsing together. You will be back in Haslach in the evening of August 15 for the beginning of ECITE II. In the evening of Friday, August 18, you will travel to Cesky Krumlov again performing in the farmhouse as a part of Art Echo's festival. Saturday, August 19, you will be back in Haslach performing in the evening along with the other projects.

c) what we want from you
If you want to participate, you have to write us an email until June 30. We will choose 5 dancers by lot and let you know by July 5

d) what we offer
You will get food and housing (in the attic of the farmhouse) during your stay in Cesky Krumlov and free transfers.

4) 2 contemporary musicians

a) more about the local team
The two musicians Christian Wagner und Peter Schöftner are part of a community of improvised music around the well-known Jazz studio Ulrichsberg. Christian Wagner with his background in classical music plays quite different music’s such as Jazz, instant composing, old and new music with different ensembles.
Peter Schöftner who is still part of the local Brass Orchestra has chosen free improvisation as his musical centre.
Christian plays all kinds of guitar, Peter plays clarinet and saxophone. More about Christian Wagner: http://members.aon.at/triobroccoli
Here you can listen to a short piece of music from an improvisation called "nachmittag eines Zauns" : music_sample.mp3

b) the working structure
You will rehearse the first 3 afternoons of ECITE II which are August 16, 17 and 18 in site-specific spaces in the Vonwiller factory area. In one sight-specific space of your choice you will perform in the evening of August 19.

c) what we want from you
For this project you need to apply as a duet. We ask you to send us a proposal combining the following aspects: a specific score growing out of the themes “body and home” - either “being at home” or emphasizing the opposite. The score should include the two musicians and consider the site-specific performance situation. Your score should work in a time frame of 10 to 15 minutes and make sense to be repeated.

d) what we offer
a fee of € 300,- for the concept and the realization.

5) a visual artist working with cloth/textile

a) more about the artist and her artistic ideas
Ursula Guttmann is educated a gold- and silver-smith and a textile artist. After her studies at the University of Art in Linz she got scholarships from the city of Linz, the federal country Salzburg and the Austrian federal chancellery. Exhibitions of her jewellery and her textile art brought her several times to Linz and Wien, her work has been to San Francisco, Usaka and Fukui (Japan), Lenica (Poland) and in a touring exhibiton to Germany, Great Britain and the Netherlands.

„The Concept of Body

The central theme of my work is the body, the cliché and the expectations in conjunction with it.

My pieces touch on the notion of artificial corporeality.
The concept arises in the field around the discussion concerning „Body Extensions“.
This term developed in the last years concluding tendencies in art, fashion, film and comic. That gets manifested in the desire of more, bigger, faster, nicer and better and its fact affects not only the western hemisphere. It becomes visible when humans swallow anabolic or get implantations of silicone. The ideal of beauty makes women deform their necks and endure surgeries for longer legs.

The body undergoes the fact of self-design. We are totally in the evolutionary experiment now but we bump against a border: the mortality of the corporeal. Our skin is sensitive to pressure, pain, touch and contact and in this case our skin is a first step of body extension, available for deformation and contortion. Up to now the skin has been the intersection of public space and intimacy. But that values no longer. Implantations can change this fact.
The authentic body is equated with the aesthetic, optimized one. The experiment has already begun, many ways are possible and the end is still open.

This is the starting point for my and the dancer’s artwork.
The bandage stands for vulnerability and further artificiality in case of surgery.
The dancer's body is strongly enwrapped by the bandages, almost unable to move in the beginning. During the performance the dancer tries to get rid of the binding but she or he succeeds just partially. The two sides of the bandages are differently designed: on the one side there should be some beautiful ornaments, expecting the aesthetic new body. The other side visible at the end of the performance is printed with phrases concerning beauty or the surface is shaped with several strange images.

Here the dancer again is enwrapped but showing the back side of the bandages standing for a desperate and never successful desire of having a perfect body.
A female dancer would probably trigger a stronger imagination, I think.“

b) the working structure
You are asked to get in contact with Ursula Guttmann as soon as you are chosen for this project. You and Ursula should come to Haslach already prepared with some ideas rising out of your communication via email. If you have also time to meet in advance, this would be great. In Haslach you will work site-specific at one (or maybe more?) spots inside the Vonwiller area. The afternoons of August 16 to 19 are reserved for you to work. The performance on August 19 will be at a site-specific spot of your choice and most likely done in 2 parts.

c) what we want from you
please send us a short, clear concept of how you would like to work with Ursula's idea as a solo choreographer and performer.

d) what we offer
a fee of € 300,- for the concept and its realization.

6) A women’s organization

a) more about the local team
For about 17 years “Frauentreff Rohrbach” has taken an important role in the district of Rohrbach which Haslach is part of. The managing director Elfie Hackl-Ceran and her team have been creating an open platform for all kind of women's issues in an otherwise still pretty conservative area. In spring 2006 she is leading the workshop series “my body, my life” inviting women from 16 to 99 years of age to exchange about all kind of influences on their bodies and their lives as women.

“we give space to women und girls, a save space, in which all women of different status, different religions, different philosophies, political opinions or sexual orientation, women of all ages may articulate their interests and their affairs, their troubles and problems. …”
from: guiding principals of Frauentreff Rohrbach

The cooperation of the participants of this workshop and the dancers will center around the associative potential of language as language is the main media of reflection in the workshop of Frauentreff Rohrbach. The project's basic idea is the exchange and expression of women from the same globe dealing with the same global issues at this point in time. Dancers will be dancing and talking simultaneously responding to topics offered by the Austrian women.

on the workshop: www.frauentreff-rohrbach.at/ver_kalender/koerper_folder.pdf

b) the working structure
In one afternoon lab during ECITE II Ingrid and Sylvia will introduce the performance score to you. You will meet the women from the workshop in the lab. Their personal questions and stories developed in the workshop and reflecting their insights and their experiences will be the base of the shared performance. Ingrid and Sylvia intend to develop a score together with Frauentreff Rohrbach that will also include the audience.

c) what we want from you
You may make up your mind whether you want to participate or not at ECITE II. The first 7 female dancers that register for this cooperation right there will be part of the project. Of course you need to be in the lab. Details about how to register will be given at ECITE II.

d) what we offer
Having a good time in the lab and in the performance.

GENERAL INFORMATION

If you have questions please contact Ingrid or Sylvia:
tanz.sylvia@aon.at or ingrid.hoerlezeder@web.de

Performing situation
The technical conditions will be extremely simple and reduced. Performing in the big hall means very simple lighting of the whole space and some specials. There will be no sound equipment for amplified music or sound. Costumes you need to take care of. The site-specific projects need to work either with day light, light of the building or lights that go with the normal electricity. There will be a clear performance setting for the whole evening developed by Sylvia and Ingrid. This should invite the audience to look at performance and improvisation in a non-traditional way which is most probably unusual for most of the public there.

The evening showing on August 19 will most probably start and end with the two site-specific works embracing the performances in the big hall in between. After the performances there will be a jam open to everyone. The musicians will also participate.

Concepts for project 1), 4) and 5)
For our point of view you will not have enough time to do research and trying out during the rehearsals in Haslach. Thus you should work with a strong idea developed before you actually start to work with the people.

Your proposal of a concept should be ½ to 1 page stating very clearly how you want to work and create the performance/improvisation. One of our main criteria to select will be how precise your idea/score/composition will be and how we think this could function as a clear working strategy and performing structure of support. Please send your proposal together with your curriculum vitae to tanz.sylvia@aon.at and ingrid.hoerlezeder@web.de by 10th of June.
We will make the choice together with the local teams and let you know our decisions by June 15.
We will then make a written agreement with all the artists collaborating with us.

NOTICE
All of the projects make you miss 2 to 4 ECITE II afternoons (labs, discussions, jam). Participating in project 4) and 5) you will also miss the country report and the election for ECITE 2008 on Friday afternoon, August 18. We expect you to participate in your teaching exchange groups in the morning.

On Saturday, August 19, we will start at lunchtime with technical and final rehearsals. All participants of ECITE moment will have to take part.
